Jase: Is ViraShield a treatment for a cold or infection?

Kimmi: No. It contains Pelargonium, Andrographis, elderberry, and zinc, but it should not be presented as preventing, curing, or shortening an infection.

Jase: Who needs to be cautious?

Kimmi: The full label excludes pregnancy and breastfeeding and warns about geranium-family allergy, asthma, heart conditions, blood thinners, immunosuppressants, and surgery. Breathing difficulty, chest pain, severe symptoms, or symptoms that persist need medical care.

Directions

Adults: Take 1 capsule 3 times daily or as directed.

Children aged 6 to 12 years: Take 1 capsule 1-2 times daily or as directed.

Keep out of reach of children.

Precautions and Contraindications: 

• Due to the Pelargonium content, avoid in people with a known allergy to plants of the geranium family.
• Exercise caution in patients with heart conditions as Pelargonium may cause tachycardia or circulatory failure (possibly due to type I hypersensitivity reactions).
• Exercise caution in patients with asthma, as Pelargonium has been reported to cause bronchospasm or dyspnoea in humans.
• Due to Andrographis content, suspend the use one week before major surgery.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding due to the Pelargonium and Andrographis content.

Side Effects:  Considered well tolerated.

Drug Interaction: Avoid if taking blood-thinning or immunosuppressant medications due to theoretical interactions with the Pelargonium and Andrographis content.
