We encapsulate vitamin C in spherical liposomes for three reasons. First, liposomes are effective vehicles for delivering vitamin C to cells. Second, vitamin C in liposomes is absorbed by the body through the lymphatic system rather than the intestines and can thus be absorbed and used in far greater doses than regular vitamin C. Third, by first traveling first through the lymphatic system, the vitamin C in liposomes goes straight to where it is needed to fight infection before being used elsewhere in the body.
(The lipid bilayer walls of liposomes are in themselves nutritionally beneficial, as they comprise phospholipids such as phosphatidylcholine derived from sunflower lecithin. Choline itself is an essential nutrient that the body requires but does not make in sufficient quantities.)
Other manufacturers of liposomal vitamin C do make effective products. However, those products taste terrible, come in fiddly single-serve packets, and therefore tend to be left at the back of the pantry never to be taken.
